ABOUT LEARNING TECHNICS

Beginning in 1988, as an applied educational research company, Learning Technics’ mission has been to improve children’s and adult’s basic ability to learn.

The founders were motivated by a desire to understand why their own “bright” children were not doing well in school. After a decade of research and expertise from a team of specialists in a variety of disciplines “Physio-Neuro therapy” training was developed.

The magic of the success came from crossbreeding ideas of neurologists, psychologists, educators, pediatricians, sociologists and psychiatrists.

This is a proven program to help those classified as "problem learners."

Here's a bit about the personal challenges that led to the Learning Technics breakthroughs:

John Heath, one of the founders of the company struggled with reading, spelling and grammar for years.

"I remember my father sitting with me while I tried to find all the “that’s,” “there’s,” or “them’s” on a page. My father would give me a penny for every one I could find and take a penny away for every one I missed. (My monetary gains were usually dismal.)

Sometimes we would read the same story several times because it was easier for me to read the second and third time. My father would get so bored he would begin to look around the room instead of following along with the reading. Soon I would be reciting the story and looking around the room, too. I found it much easier to memorize the story than to read it.

As time went on, there were many tutors. They managed to keep me from failing, but their continual help was essential. I hated feeling dumb. Sometimes the frustration was so great that it would bring me to tears. Even as an adult, these problems continued to surface.

When my eight-year-old son, Trent, began to experience some of the same difficulties, I knew the frustrations that were lurking at every turn because I had been down that road myself. Trent’s teachers said, “He just needs a little extra help.” But I knew that tutoring was not the answer. I had been tutored to death and school had still been a struggle. I was driven to find a better path for Trent.

This quest led me to Sally Higley, who had been searching for years to find out why her bright teen could not read. She had exhausted all that the educational system had to offer without success and had been investigating a number of programs and techniques outside standard educational practices.

Many of these approaches seemed weird and unconventional, but that didn’t bother her. She was not going to leave one stone unturned. Sally and I found common ground in our mutual passion to help our children and also help others facing the same challenges. We decided to create an applied research company, which would conduct research in the real world as opposed to the laboratory."

The Learning Technics Team

Since 1988, Learning Technics has successfully treated thousands of struggling students, in both public education and the private sector. We were recently invited to present our findings at an international conference on learning disabilities at Oxford University. The invitation to present was extended because of the significant academic gains shown in a number of pilot studies conducted in 5 western states.

John Heath, Cofounder and CEO of Learning Technics Inc.

In 1988 he sensed that the solutions to many learning problems were available—they existed in scores of disciplines waiting to be assembled. “My goal was to find these pieces, and bring them together into a step-by-step program that was highly effective and could be readily dispersed to the many individuals who struggle with learning,” Heath explains.

He has been on the forefront of converting the most recent neuro-scientific research into practical applications that will permanently improve an individual’s ability to learn. He has lectured from Kansas to California in public and private settings.

Sally Higley, Cofounder of Learning Technics Inc., Intercept Program Codirector, National Workshop Presenter on Physio-Neuro Therapy

When Sally Higley and John Heath founded the company they set two goals:
1) to discover why some seemingly bright people struggle with learning;
and
2) to find out what can be done to permanently improve their performance.

Thanks to Sally's dogged persistence, there is help for students with learning disabilities.

Loretta J. Heath, program developer, instructor training
Loretta has been a key researcher at Learning Technics for the past eighteen years.   She has constantly shaped and improved the Learning Technics program from new research as it becomes available. She is a key architect of the Learning Technics program. Loretta has trained hundreds of individuals to help thousands of students to find learning much easier.

Mary H. Johnson, B.S., Director of the Intercept program
1968 Brigham Young University, Teacher K-8 1968-2000, Director of Intercept program for schools 1988-Present.

Andrew Mellen, Neuro Process Evaluator, MS, C.P.N.A.
Andrew enrolled in the Learning Technics' program just after starting his university training, which he found very difficult. After finishing at Learning Technics, school was so much easier. He subsequently asked if he could learn to help others like himself. He now holds an MS degree and over the last eight years has permanently changed many lives.

Laurie Herrscher, managing teacher, instructor training
Laurie came to Learning Technics to find help for her struggling son. Now fourteen years later as she teaches and trains others, she is still finding the same excitement she felt as she watched her son's eyes sparkle with each success.
