How we learn

More than 54 million people in the United States struggle with learning.
Half of these people are children, or about 1 in every 5 students.
Learning difficulties are not confined to education. They affect every facet of a person's life.

There are two phases to learning. The first phase is the teaching phase and that is what schools do. Tutors teach, parents teach in the form of homework, all these people are involved in what we call teaching.

The second phase is not as well understood but is equally important. It is called the neurological phase of learning.

Learning Technics deals exclusively with this phase.

What is learning?

The Unabridged Webster's Dictionary defines learning as: "1. To acquire knowledge or skill by study. 2. To become informed. 3. To learn is to add to one’s knowledge or information. 4. Knowledge acquired by systematic study in any field or scholarly application."

Any concerned parent, frustrated student, committed teacher, or professional tutor knows from experience that while these definitions may be technically accurate, they are fundamentally incomplete. Each definition implies that information, knowledge or skill comes simply as a result of systematic study... all that is required for learning to take place is for the “student” to show up… listen… read… and take notes in a systematic fashion and learning will automatically take place. Nothing could be further from the truth.

What is teaching?

Webster defines teaching as: "1. To impart knowledge. 2. To give instruction. 3. To train, school, discipline, admonish or reprove."

By definition, it stands to reason that if learning is “to acquire knowledge” then teaching is “to impart knowledge." Simply said, teaching is about imparting information. Learning is about getting your brain to process that information correctly.

Turning teaching into learning

There are two basic activities that must be addressed to improve the way the brain controls our thinking, emotions, physical movements and all learning.

First, we have to deal with input (or the accuracy and speed with which the brain receives data from our senses).

Second, we have to deal with the accuracy and speed with which the brain processes the data received to generate physical, mental, and emotional responses.

To change a person’s ability to learn, it is necessary to understand any limitation of how the person both receives AND processes information. Evaluating a person’s
mental processing strengths and weaknesses is the first step in finding the underlying cause of learning problems. Without this type of evaluation you can easily end up treating symptoms only and can sometimes make the problem worse.

For a poor reader to practice reading is like a poor golfer practicing his bad swing. He will get better and better at doing it wrong. That is what tutoring and practice does to poor readers if the underlying problem causing a person to read poorly is not identified first. The point is, we do not correct a problem by just treating the symptom.

Today, symptoms of ADD and ADHD or other learning disorders with various labels, are often treated with methods that don't address the underlying cause of the problem and the frustration of learning disorders often continue year after year.

Here is a breakdown of some of the common trouble areas and their underlying causes.

ACADEMIC SYMPTOMS LIKELY NEUROLOGICAL WEAKNESSES ASSOCIATED BEHAVIORS
Poor reading

Poor visual memory. Weak visual tracking. Difficulty processing sounds or phonics.

Will only read under pressure. Will feel great embarrassment when asked to read aloud. Skips words or lines. Misreads words.
Forgets previously learned information. Does poorly on tests.

Poor short term memory (Memory lasting 24 to 36 hours.)

Progress is slow because reteaching is often required, therefore the student feels dumb.
Poor Spelling Poor visual memory. Difficulty processing and sequencing sounds. Weak concentration. Dislikes writing. Will write using small words and as few words as possible. Peers will make fun of the student's spelling ability, thus causing poor self-esteem.
Poor Comprehension

Poor concentration (symptoms of ADD/ADHD). Poor left/right-brain communication.

Will often make the same mistakes over and over. Often gets lost in lectures, conversations and math sequences, leading to frustration.
Poor Organizational Skills and/or Difficulty following Verbal Directions. Difficulty sequencing tasks. Difficulty prioritizing tasks. Poor concentration (symptoms of ADD/ADHD). Feel pressured when required to meet deadlines. Often misses deadlines and neglects to hand in work.

Rewiring the Brain

It has been proven that the brain can remodel itself to permanently improve learning throughout life.

Changing how the brain processes all information including, attitude, thinking, physical movement and learning is the basis of Physio-Neuro therapy, the technical name for what we do at Learning Technics.

Since it’s inception, the Learning Technics’ program has worked consistently and effectively to permanently correct learning problems, by significantly increasing a person’s ability to turn teaching into learning. It has even turned failing students into honor students and raised the average SAT scores of students who went through the program by 43 percentile points. more about the research

Helping “slow” learners in the traditional approach often means tutoring from parents or others which usually leads to intense frustration and little gain. Today, most “slow” learners find themselves in resource programs, where it is estimated that less than 30% ever advance to the mainstream of education.

These programs usually pass the students from year to year by lowering expectations rather than by correcting their underlying learning problems. At Learning Technics we design activities and experiences for the brain that will create increased capacity to perform specific tasks. It has taken much research and many years of experience to learn what works effectively.

Read the Rock and Hammer story to see why some approaches used by tutors and schools just don't work.

A Revolution in Learning

The key to developing learning power is to tailor activities to stimulate specific types of brain development. Learning Technics’ Physio-Neuro therapy has had remarkable success in designing and administering programs that work with specific improvements to meet specific challenges.

Understanding, identifying and effectively using Mental Processes to treat Learning Disabilities is essential in reprogramming the brain and creating new neural learning pathways. It can be done!

Since 1988, Learning Technics has been revolutionizing the process of helping "problem learners" improve their basic ability to learn. Learn more about us
