Parent Evaluation

For children from 6 to 12 years of age

Below you will find some sample tests that can be conducted at home to help parents determine if their student has neuro-processing weaknesses.

Visual Tracking Evaluation

The parent holds two pencils 12 - 14 inches from the child's face. The pencils are held about 12 inches apart and centered on the child's face with the erasers held at his/her eye level.

Ask the child to focus on one eraser then move the eyes smoothly to the other while holding the head stationary. The child will continue moving his/her eyes from eraser to eraser for 10 seconds, with the eyes focusing briefly on each eraser.

The parent watches for dropping of the eyes, overshooting (moving beyond the target) or hesitations during the eye movements. Any of these problems would indicate that the child has poor visual tracking.

Poor visual tracking is one of the major causes of poor reading abilities and can be corrected by doing visual tracking exercises.

Adults should be able to make 22-23 clean, rhythmic movements in 10 seconds. Children ages 9-11 should be able to make 18-19 smooth, rhythmic movements in 10 seconds. Children ages 6-8 should make 14-15 smooth movements.

Right/Left Brain Communication Evaluation

The parent will stand in front of the student. The parent will ask the student to march in place, raising the right hand as the left foot raises from the floor and vice versa. (See the diagram.)

If the child can easily march in this manner, ask the child three questions that he/she can easily answer.

The three questions asked should get progressively more complicated. The child should attempt to keep marching while he/she answers the questions.

Eighty-five percent of the children whose march is labored or cannot do the exercise while answering the questions will have difficulty with short-term memory (remembering information for 24 to 36 hours).

Visual Memory Evaluation

Click here to print the four-picture strips needed for this evaluation.

The parent will cut the picture page into six picture strips (following the dotted lines) and cut out the eight individual picture squares.

Arrange the individual picture squares face up on a table in front of the child.   The parent will show the child one of the strips as the child slowly counts from "1" to "12".   (While the child is counting, he/she will attempt to visually remember the sequence of pictures on the strip.)

The parent will take the picture strip away when the student says the number "10".

After the student has finished counting to "12" he/she will find the individual pictures on the table that match the pictures on the strip and arrange them in the same order. If the child has difficulty doing this exercise, it would indicate that the student has poor visual memory.

Poor visual memory can be a major cause of poor reading and spelling skills. Doing exercises similar to the one above can strengthen poor visual memory.
