The Intercept Learning Disability Program for Schools

A Solution for Public, Private, and Charter Schools who want to do better. Teachers have reported 30% or more improvement in student performance after using these techniques with their students.

The Purpose

• To integrate a highly effective, research based program for schools to keep or move
academically at-risk students into the educational mainstream.

• To change the way the student takes in, processes, stores and retrieves information so they can learn at normal speed in a regular classroom environment.

The Need

•  Most at-risk students find themselves in resource programs

•  It is estimated less than 30% of these students ever advance to the mainstream of education.

• These programs usually pass students from year to year by lowering expectations for them, rather than correcting their underlying learning problems.

•  It costs twice as much to educate an at-risk student, often more than eleven thousand dollars per year for just one student's remedial care.

• These students are not only in danger of not gaining an education, but are at risk of economic and social failure throughout life.

• The dollar and human cost of helping these students to succeed in the workforce and in society in general is enormous.

The goal of the Intercept Program is to stop this chain of events for a cost of less than one year of special education. This could potentially free millions of dollars for other areas of education.

When a person experiences ongoing difficulty with learning, it's often hard to know what approach will help. Read the Rock and Hammer story to see why some approaches used by tutors and schools just don't work.

A Tested and Proven Learning Disability Program

• This is not an experimental program. It is a proven program.

• Currently in use by school districts in Idaho and Utah.

• The training teaches students "how to learn."

• Few students have ever had to be referred back to remedial programs or special tutoring.

Learning Disability Program Goals

• To discover, through one-on-one evaluations, the specific problems that are inhibiting the learning of each child in the program.

• To design for each student an individualized program using Physio-Neuro Training to correct that child's underlying learning problems.

• To keep in (or return to) the educational mainstream a minimum of 90 percent of the children who would otherwise be in need of remedial educational services (this goal has been consistently met) using Physio-Neuro Training.

• To produce valid and reliable data on the success of each child, using a standardized test, such as the SAT.

• To develop programs of community support with participation from local business enterprises to provide an extra source of funds for this program.

The Learning Disability Program

The Learning Technics Intercept Program was developed by Learning Technics, an educational research company, in conjunction with a program board consisting of five doctors and educators. The original board members were specialists in the fields of education, psychology, psychiatry, and medicine.

The materials examined and woven into the Intercept Program came from such
disciplines as speech therapy, audiology, optical therapy, special education and many others. The research and methodologies of many noted persons have been used.

The blending and structuring of this information into a readily usable package is the magic of the Learning Technics approach. Even the smallest and most seemingly insignificant part of the training is critical to its success.

Learning Disability Program Overview

Based on each child’s evaluation results, an individualized program is developed. This program provides specific activities to train the child’s sensory systems and brain to efficiently take in, process, store and retrieve what they are taught. Some of the things the students are trained to do:

•  Maintain mental focus – automatically filter out unwanted stimuli
•  Conceptualize – make a whole idea out of a number of pieces
•  Sequence – efficiently handle the number of steps necessary to execute complex directions and tasks
•  Position in space – keep track of where they are in a specific process or in relation to their physical and social environment
•  Cross brain patterning – escalate the transfer of information between various parts of the brain to facilitate information storage and retrieval
•  Tracking – be able to visually move across a page and get all of the information into their minds in an automatic and orderly fashion

In addition, students are taught important life skills that usually are not properly
developed due to their learning problems. These behavioral skills are as critical to
classroom success as learning skills.

These include such concepts as:

•  Overcoming adversity ("I can learn from my mistakes.")
•  Handling stress
•  Visualizing themselves as being successful
•  Correcting their errors without taking it personally
•  Trusting their feelings
•  Simplifying tasks into small, manageable parts
•  Impulse control

Learning Disability Program Mechanics and Organization

1. A school Intercept team is formed comprised of one paraprofessional trainer for every 3-4 students the school wishes to service at any one time during the school year.  In the daily sessions, a team member will work one-on-one with a student for about 30 minutes a day.  The trainer will then be available for other assignments the remainder of the day.

2. Each member is trained by Learning Technics to implement the Physio-Neuro training program.

3. Teachers screen and recommend students who are struggling in their class.

4. Students selected by the school are evaluated by the Intercept team under the supervision of Learning Technics to determine their suitability for the program and the specific type of assisnance they need.

5. The teachers and aides are trained by Learning Technics to work effectively and affirmatively with their students to keep the interaction fun and rewarding. The aides are taught specific activities designed to develop their students’ input, processing, storage, and retrieval skills. These activities are also designed to reinforce the academic activities being taught in the students’ regular classroom.

6. Team members may from time to time exchange students for the purpose of collaborating on individual adaptations for the students.

7. The teams schedule must include at least 1 hour each week to review the training DVD together and asses individual student needs.

Most students can complete the program in approximately nine months. As one student finishes, another can be moved into the program.

Here are some comments by teachers about

   the Learning Technics program:

"I know I’m a capable teacher, but that talent

could not be used to help Chris until he had the

ability to understand instructions. Learning Technics

not only unlocked his abilities, but enabled me to

   use mine."

"When Jake began the Learning Technics

program, he tested substantially below grade level in

both reading and math. After being with the program

for five months, his reading had improved markedly

and he was at the top of his class in math. Even his

handwriting had improved dramatically. Needless to

say, because of his success in school, Jake’s

   behavior problems have disappeared!"
