Self Evaluation
Below you will find some sample tests that can be conducted at home to help determine if you have neuro-processing weaknesses.
Visual Tracking Evaluation
Have someone hold two pencils 12 - 14 inches from your face. The pencils are held about 12 inches apart and centered on your face with the erasers held at eye level.
Focus on one eraser then move your eyes smoothly to the other while holding your head stationary. Continue moving your eyes from eraser to eraser for 10 seconds, with the eyes focusing briefly on each eraser.
The person helping watches for dropping of the eyes, overshooting (moving beyond the target) or hesitations during the eye movements. Any of these problems would indicate poor visual tracking. Poor visual tracking is one of the major causes of poor reading abilities and can be corrected by doing visual tracking exercises. Adults should be able to make 22-23 clean, rhythmic movements in 10 seconds. Children ages 9-11 should be able to make 18-19 smooth, rhythmic movements in 10 seconds. Children ages 6-8 should make 14-15 smooth movements.
Right/Left Brain Communication Evaluation
Stand in front of the person helping you. March in place, raising your right hand as your left foot raises from the floor and vice versa. (See the diagram.)
If you can easily march in this manner, have your helper ask three questions that you can easily answer.
The three questions asked should get progressively more complicated. Attempt to keep marching while you answer the questions.
Eighty-five percent of people whose march is labored or cannot do the exercise while answering the questions will have difficulty with short-term memory (remembering information for 24 to 36 hours).
